Other Visitations

In the course of writing this book, many people either contacted me or came to my attention regarding other strange visions or visitations they experienced around the time of their loved ones’ deaths. Most of the phenomena they reported seemed unrelated, at least directly, to the standard deathbed vision, where the person who is dying sees deceased relatives or friends.

Instead, many of the accounts described visits from afar from the dying or recently dead. They also involved strange forewarnings, vivid dreams, physical sensations, inexplicable lights and a range of other variations around these themes.

At first, these narratives seemed to be so unrelated to the subject-matter of this book – the deathbed vision – that I felt they should be excluded. Some cursory research, however, established that this course of action would be unwise. Scattered throughout historic texts, I found many examples supporting the case for their inclusion in a separate chapter.

Many of the stories I found date back a remarkably long way. Accounts where healthy people shared in their ailing relatives’ deathbed visions were chronicled by the Society for Psychical Research in Britain as far back as the end of the nineteenth century. In one case, two sisters who were in attendance while another sister was dying observed a bright light containing the faces of two of their deceased brothers. The sister died soon after.

Other instances, where those who are dying appear to relatives living at a distance, have regularly been recorded. Sometimes, the dying may report to those who sit with them where they have been and who they have seen. One example, dating back to the late seventeenth century, involved a woman named Mary Goffe, who was dying at her father’s house some distance from her own home where her two children resided.

Mary expressed a great desire to visit her children, which due to her illness proved to be impossible. Between one and two o’clock at night, she was seen to fall into a trance. At exactly the same time, a likeness of her was spotted in her home observing her offspring while asleep. The following day, she declared to her mother that she had indeed visited her children the previous night. She died shortly afterwards.

In more up-to-date times, Dr. Raymond Moody – pioneer investigator of the near-death experience in the 1970s – chronicled multiple deathbed case histories where entire families described how they, too, had witnessed strange events at the time of a family member’s death. Some outlined how they accompanied their loved ones on at least part of their afterlife journeys. Others described how they shared in the life reviews of those who were passing on. The following chapter features examples of at least some of the phenomena described above.

MAUREEN, FROM COUNTY LIMERICK, is convinced she was contacted by a friend who died. The event happened in 2010.

Back in the early 1960s, there was a lovely family from County Westmeath who came to our area to work. There was a young couple and their brothers, too.
